A prisoner has been found dead at Auckland Prison at Paremoremo, says the Department of Corrections.
The inmate was found dead at the prison at Paremoremo this afternoon, said chief executive Barry Matthews.
"Police are investigating and we can not comment further until the next of kin have been notified." Auckland police communications were unable to provide any details on the death this afternoon.
Auckland Prison holds 681 male prisoners and contains New Zealand's only specialist maximum-security prison unit.
