A firearm used in a fatal shooting in Gisborne early on Sunday has been identified as a rifle, with police still searching for it.
"We would like information about the whereabouts of the firearm, which remains unaccounted for," said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott.
"We believe a .22 calibre rifle was used to shoot Mr Witeri."
Douglas Witeri, 39, died in Gisborne Hospital on Sunday night after he was shot in the head at a house in the Gisborne suburb of Elgin.
A 42-year-old man will appear in Gisborne District Court again tomorrow.
He has been charged with assault but police have indicated a more serious charge is pending.
Police would like to obtain more information about the incident itself, Mr Scott said.
"We would also like to get any background information to the
incident that will assist us with the inquiry."
