Speed and alcohol are believed to have contributed to a fatal crash in Silverdale last night, police say.
The vehicle was seen speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road before it crashed at the corner of East Coast Road and Hibiscus Highway about 9.30pm.
The vehicle collided into another vehicle and a traffic pole.
The driver of the speeding vehicle died at the scene, while the driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital in a moderate condition.
Police this morning said early indications showed speed and alcohol were believed to be factors in the crash.
The police serious crash investigation attended the scene and was continuing its investigation.
Before the crash, police said a patrol unit in the area saw the vehicle speed past and attempted to locate it.
Police then located and spoke to a member of the public who had witnessed the car being driven at speed.
The crashed vehicle was located shortly afterwards.
Police said the dead driver's name would not be released until family members had been informed.
A local resident told the Herald last night she heard one car "speeding" past her house followed shortly by the sound of sirens.
"I heard the speeding car and then I heard the patrol car," she said.
"We've driven down to have a look -- it's a terrible wreckage."
