A young woman has died after she and a man were thrown from their out-of-control car on the road from Castlepoint.
Masterton fire services and police were called to the intersection of Masterton Castlepoint Rd and Masterton Stronvar Rd about 7pm yesterday, and found the driver and a passenger had been ejected from their car.
The vehicle had left the road and rolled into a fence and ditch.
Ambulance crew had to perform CPR on the woman. The pair were taken to Wairarapa Hospital. It is believed one of them was airlifted by Life Flight's Westpac Rescue helicopter to Wellington.
Masterton Fire Service station officer Garry Nielson said one person had been thrown out the back window, and the other through a passenger window.
He believed neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt.
Masterton Castlepoint Rd was closed to allow the Serious Crash Unit to investigate the cause of the crash.
