The war began on August 5, 1914, with promises the boys would be home by Christmas.
Four Christmases later, 18,058 New Zealanders had been killed, and another 41,000 were wounded or fell ill while on active duty.
New Zealand, a young country of 1.1 million, sent about 10% of its population to war.
At 11am on November 11, 1918 - Armistice Day- the guns fell silent, their service nearing the end.
Thousands of Kiwis made their way home - but thousands remained, buried in Kantara, Beersheba, Lone Pine, Polygon Wood, Etaples, Messines Ridge, Tyne Cot...
A century later, New Zealand still remembers them.
