Livamol Classic rescheduled to Sunday of Labour Weekend by NZTR

The rescheduling of the Livamol Classic means the best horseflesh in both horse racing codes will be on show over Labour Weekend.

The spring's premier group 1 race was called off on Saturday after light rain on the Hastings racecourse made the track too dangerous for racing.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing announced yesterday the $250,000 middle-distance feature will be run on a nine-race programme at Hastings on October 22, the Sunday of Labour Weekend.

The group 1 event will be accompanied by the group 3 Spring Sprint which will also be transferred to the Sunday programme.

It is largely unknown which stars will line up in the rescheduled race.

Te Akau stables would not rush into a decision on whether star galloper Gingernuts would be entered in the rescheduled race, principal David Ellis said.

Saturday's abandonment which meant he missed a key lead-up race has resulted in the chestnut's Caulfield and Melbourne Cup campaigns being abandoned.

''We need to now decide whether the Livamol is the best way forward for Gingernuts to the Emirates Stakes, which is now worth $A2 million ($NZ2.2 million), on the last day of the Melbourne Cup carnival,'' Ellis said.

''I will need to discuss it with the owners and then we will make our decision.''

Ellis was able to confirm that the stable's other leading contender for the abandoned Livimol, Chance To Dream, would definitely be aimed at the re-running of the race.

It is likely northern group 1 performer Volkstok'n'barrell will also line up on Labour Weekend.

The horse was scheduled to fly to Sydney this week, but transport difficulties meant that trip was cancelled.

Although the makeup of the Livimol Classic is unknown it is still anticipated New Zealand will see a galaxy of equine stars over Labour Weekend.

Black-type races will be staged at Arawa Park on Saturday, October 21, before the rescheduled Livimol Classic programme on Sunday.

New Zealand's best pacers and trotters, including Lazarus and Heaven Rocks, will then line up in the Ashburton Flying Stakes on Labour Day Monday.

Te Rapa racecourse will also hold the James & Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes for 3yr-olds on Labour Day.
