Burst water main floods Invercargill street

One of Invercargill’s main streets has been flooded today after a water main burst.

Several Yarrow St residents' homes are at risk of water reaching them, as the water visibly continues to rise.

Invercargill fire station officer Toby Pascoe said they were notified by concerned residents at about 10.30 this morning.

Their first priority was keeping members of the public safe and the area would be cordoned off for the rest of the day, he said.

Contractors were working to ease the situation and Mr Pascoe said there would be “substantial roadworks needed to rectify it”.

Water had lifted up parts of the road and was flowing from the gaps.

A police spokeswoman said water was causing the roads to "break and subside.''

Yarrow St resident John Hyde said he didn’t even know it had happened until he heard the fire appliance arrive and saw all the water.

“All our water has been shut off, we can’t go anywhere but luckily our house is quite high up.”

Other residents weren’t so lucky and worked to clear belongings from areas the water might reach.

The area affected is mostly residential but also includes one of the entrances to ILT Stadium Southland.
