The Christmas Eve crowds came, emptied the Otago Farmers Market, and left on Saturday morning, their bags overflowing with fresh local food for Christmas feasts.

The result, Organicland's John Baker said, was a good one for vendors.

"It really started with a hiss and a roar, and sort of died about 10.30am."

By that time, though, Mr Baker said he had the best financial return of any Saturday market he had attended.

"It is the biggest money-making day of the year," he said.

Across the way, David Cooke, of The Fruit Garden, was busy, but happy, after shifting about one tonne of cherries.

"Do you want a picture of me smiling?" he asked.
