Football: More depth, experience for Otago United

Otago United has named a squad with more depth and experience than the side which finished sixth last season.

It features the returned of experienced striker Aaron Burgess and seasoned defender Tim Horner. Talented keeper Liam Little also returns, having transferred south from Auckland.

Burgess opted to take last season off, although he played club football for Dunedin Technical and wrapped up a fifth consecutive golden boot award, banging in 28 goals. That ability in front of goal was sorely missed by Otago United, coach Richard Murray said.

"He has played the equivalent of A-League and it is just the experience he brings," Murray said.

"Horner will add that calming influence as well, and Liam Little has been away for the last three or four years playing for Auckland City and Waitakere and is a big one for us.

"We've got Peter Evans as well, so we've got two quality goalkeepers. Basically, we've got more depth this year, which is a big difference.

"The squad is 95% local, which is what our target is as well. It is about developing players within the region and giving them exposure, and that is really important."

One of the few exceptions is Jake Morrison.

The American defender has transferred south from Eastern Suburbs and can play anywhere across the back.

Otago will be without slick duo Darren Overton and Mike Cunningham, who left halfway through last season to pursue opportunities in Australia.

And Footballsouth player of the year Harley Rodeka has transferred to Hawkes Bay.

"They are big losses but we've picked up a lot of experience to offset that.

"These boys have another year's experience under the belt to kick on. I'd like to say we are going to make the top four but again it is about exposure and getting these boys up to the level required."

Otago opens its campaign against Manawatu at Forsyth Barr Stadium on November 4.
