An appeal has gone out to help protect the lower Waitaki River, with only two days left for people to make a submission on lowering its minimum flow.
The Lower Waitaki River Management Society, a group set up in 2004 to oppose power development on the lower river, has sent emails to a large number of people suggesting all the work it did during that period could now be undone.
The society is opposing, in a submission, a change to the Waitaki catchment water allocation regional plan being considered by Environment Canterbury (ECan).
Submissions on Plan Change 3 close tomorrow at 5pm at ECan in Christchurch.
By last Friday, only one submission had been received, but ECan could not give an updated figure yesterday.
Society member Linn Koevoet appealed to people to ''help promote a healthy future for the lower Waitaki River''.
The proposal is to lower the minimum flow from 150cumecs to 102cumecs for periods over summer, which were set in the 2005 Waitaki catchment water allocation regional plan drawn up by a Government-appointed body that considered more than 1200 submissions from the community.
The society highlighted on its website the issues it had with Plan Change 3 and provided a five-minute submission form for people to fill in and file before tomorrow's deadline.
Other information and a submission form is also available on the ECan website.
