A reduced speed limit will again be in place in George St, Port Chalmers, for the peak of the cruise ship season.

Chalmers Community Board chairman Steve Walker said the board recently voted to put $1000 towards placing a temporary 30kmh speed limit on George St from December 20 to March 14.

''The board is extremely keen to see safer speed limits in Port Chalmers, particularly for older residents, and when there are large numbers of cruise ship visitors. The last thing we want see is anyone getting injured or even killed,'' he said.

''Last year's trial results showed that all traffic speeds reduced quite significantly while the 30kmh [limit] was in place, so of course we are happy to have voted to initiate the trial once again this year.''

It was ''frustrating'' the speed limit reduction could not be introduced permanently.

''I am continuously being asked by residents and businesses why the speed limit cannot become a permanent feature, but unfortunately the current New Zealand Transport Agency policy does not allow for this to happen.''

NZTA is also putting $1000 towards the temporary speed limit.
