It is a sign of progress for the new Kmart store in South Dunedin, but an opening date remains under wraps.

The Otago Daily Times spotted a sign being erected at the South Dunedin site.

The Australian retail giant began hiring in March and hoped to employ more than 100 people at Kmart once its doors opened.

Otago Land Group owner Martin Dippie, who is developing the site, previously said contractors were aiming to finish work on the building by April.

He told the ODT yesterday that construction was still ongoing, but they were "pleased" with the progress.

"With a big corporate job such as this, there’s a lot of expectation.

"There are a lot of moving parts, but the team are working flat-out.

"It’s going to be a very high-quality shop, there is a lot of detail going into a build like this.

"Once it’s open, it’s going to look fantastic."

Speculation about when the store would open had run wild since news of its return broke in late-2022.

Existing Kmart department managers from other stores would come across to fill the ranks, in addition to hiring other new managers.

On social media, those claiming to have been interviewed for positions at the store said they had been cited opening dates for this month and June.

Kmart was unable to respond to comment before deadline yesterday.
