The Highlanders perhaps have other, more pressing positions to bolster but they are welcoming a player who has been around the block and then some.
They yesterday announced the signing of 35-year-old former All Blacks prop Angus Ta’avao.
The vastly experienced loosehead or tighthead has played 167 Super Rugby games for the Blues, Chiefs and Waratahs, and played the last of his 23 tests in 2022.
Ta’avao, born in Auckland and educated at Dilworth School, has also made over a century of provincial appearances for Auckland and Taranaki.
He is a regular sight on our television screens as an expert commentator, when rugby commitments allow, but it is not like he is a part-time rugby player.
Just a year ago, Ta’avao played every game for the Blues on their rampant charge to the Super Rugby Pacific title.
Ta’avao is looking forward to the opportunity to head south.
"I’m excited to join the Highlanders in 2026. I look forward to adding my flavour, embracing the culture, and contributing to the team’s success."
His signature was welcomed by Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph.
"Building depth across the park is critical for a successful campaign," Joseph said.
"Angus brings a wealth of experience to our forward pack. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated resilience and character which make him an ideal fit for our culture and ambitions."
The Highlanders have one elite prop in their books in the form of All Blacks loosehead Ethan de Groot, while Saula Ma’u and Sefo Kautai are proven performers.
Josh Bartlett showed some promise last season, but it is unclear whether little-sighted youngster Rohan Wingham or veteran Daniel Lienert-Brown will be back in 2026.
Highlanders fans are now eager to see if their club is signing a top-line first five - Chiefs playmaker Josh Jacomb is understood to be the priority target, but it would not be a surprise if overseas options were also being considered.
It is believed the Highlanders have signed New Zealand under-20 talent Stanley Solomon, who shapes as a fullback/wing option but has also played first five.
The midfield and lock are likely two other areas where there will be some incomings.
