BP says it is supporting staff at a Dunedin service station after an employee was pulled to the ground during a late-night shift.

Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police were called to BP Connect Southern, in Cumberland St, about 10.30pm on Monday.

A staff member had gone out the back and saw that "the milk crates or something weren’t even", Sgt Lee said.

While going to fix them, the staff member was then "pulled to the ground by an unknown subject and then they’ve run off".

Police officers and a canine unit searched the area and could not find anything, Sgt Lee said.

A BP spokesperson said they were supporting its team and assisting police with their investigation.

"At BP, the safety of our customers and team members is our first priority.

"We work closely with the police and have CCTV ... at all our BP Connect sites."
