At the end of last year, Sam Weepers began a petition to open the hospital’s cath lab 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Yesterday, he handed over the petition with 10,215 signatures to Labour MPs Ingrid Leary and Rachel Brooking and Green Party MP Francisco Hernandez on the hospital’s doorstep.
The petition — ‘‘Provide full 24/7 access to Dunedin Public Hospital catheterisation laboratory’’ — was started in honour of Mr Weepers’ late wife, Sheralyn Tipene-Weepers, a te reo Māori teacher at Bayfield High School, who died two years ago at the age of 48.
‘‘I wanted to make sure Sheralyn was seen and heard, and to carry on her legacy of awhinatia — to serve, support and help others.’’
Ms Leary, Ms Brooking and Mr Hernandez will present the petition to Parliament.
It will then go to the select committee, which will consider the petition.
