Hosting three days of sold-out Super Rugby Pacific games over a super round at Christchurch’s new indoor stadium has paid dividends after visitors spent $13 million.

An economic report by Fresh Info showed the takings more than doubled the forecasted $6.1m.

More than 73,000 fans watched 10 teams play it out over five games at the $680m-plus multi-use stadium in late April.

About 16,500 of them were out-of-towners and just over 3900 international visitors, including from the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

The visitor numbers also exceeded expectations with more than 49,000 bed nights counted up, more than the 34,000 predicted.

Super Rugby Pacific chief executive Jack Mesley said in a statement the sell-out crowds, quality of rugby and atmosphere across the three days made it a memorable occasion for fans and teams alike.

The report showed the impact extended beyond the stadium with domestic visitor numbers travelling to Christchurch and spending beyond expectations, he said.

‘‘It’s a great demonstration of how rugby can bring people together and create real value for the communities that host our biggest events.’’

Crusaders chief executive Colin Mansbridge said the super round felt like more than a rugby event as it was a milestone moment for Christchurch and its new stadium.

The results showed the city’s deep connection to rugby, he said.

‘‘I don’t think anyone who was there will forget the weekend in a hurry.

‘‘We saw packed stands, great rugby and a city that came alive around the event.’’

Acting Mayor Victoria Henstock said the city could not have asked for a better way to open the new stadium.

‘‘Our rebuilt and revitalised vibrant city centre was made for major events like this.

‘‘The city bids for events such as super round not just for the short-term economic stimulus, but because showing the city is a vibrant, successful place helps position us for longer-term benefits such as investment and talent attraction.’’

The opening night Crusaders and Waratahs match was the most-watched of the regular season for Sky.

The host for next year’s super round has yet to be confirmed.
