Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said police were called to a residential address in Brockville, about 4pm yesterday.
There were reports of a man allegedly assaulting a woman and chasing her with a knife.
Police arrived and found a 51-year-old man, who was known to police, at the top of the driveway.
Officers advised the man he was under arrest, which he ignored.
The man ‘‘continued to aggressively approach police with his fists clenched, resulting in him being tasered,’’ Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
‘‘When he was subsequently searched, a knife was located on him.’’
The man was immediately provided with ‘‘appropriate post-taser care’’ and medical treatment, and did not receive any injuries as a result of being tasered.
However, the man remained ‘‘aggressive and agitated’’ as he received the medical care at Dunedin Hospital.
He allegedly attempted to leave the hospital while he remained under arrest.
He was subsequently pepper-sprayed, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
The man was held in police custody and was scheduled to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
He was charged with contravening a protection order, injuring with intent to injure, male assaults female, possession of an offensive weapon and trespass, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
