Mrs Hughes said the appointment was an honour and would make her work as co-ordinator of Central Otago Budgeting Services easier as clients often needed papers to be signed by JPs.
"I'll be a one-stop shop, so it removes the stress.''
The work was rewarding as it exposed her to people in very different situations, she said.
Royal Federation of New Zealand Justices Central Otago Association chairman Anthony Young, who chairs the Central Otago branch for justices of the peace, said new appointments were not made often.
"It's for people who are respected and involved with the community.''
