Looking forward to sharing region’s stories

Hello, my name is Carys Trotter, and I’m the new reporter in Alexandra.

I’ve just moved down from Nelson and I am really excited to be stepping into a role I’ve always wanted — working in regional journalism and telling the stories that matter most to local communities.

I come from a family with mixed roots — half of my family lives all over New Zealand, and the other half is from Wales and beyond. Hence the unusual name — sounds like Paris with a C.

Originally from Palmerston North, I spent several years living and moving around Australia before returning to New Zealand with my family. I studied a bachelor of communication and media at the University of Tasmania, and feel very lucky to now call Central Otago home.

My family has strong, agricultural roots in New Zealand. One grandpa was a plant scientist at Massey, the other a farmer in Palmerston North for most of his life, only retiring last year at 94.

New Zealand has always been home for me, and a big part of my excitement for this job is being able to live and work within a tightknit, rural community.

Alexandra has already been so welcoming. I’ve met so many wonderful people in a short time, and I’m looking forward to getting to know the region more and sharing its stories.

I hope to be someone people feel comfortable approaching — whether it’s a big story or something small that deserves to be told. Looking forward to meeting you!
