Winter Games NZ is one of 13 organisations benefiting from the latest round of donations by the Community Trust of Southland.

The trust announced it was making $2.16 million available for southern projects yesterday, including $150,000 for the Winter Games NZ.

The inaugural Winter Games will take place between August 22 and 30 in Wanaka, Queenstown, Naseby and Dunedin.

The games are being touted as the biggest winter sports event outside the Winter Olympics and are expected to bring an estimated $50 million in direct spending to the Otago economy.

The trust's grant will be used to install state-of-the-art timing systems at Coronet Peak.

More than 800 athletes and 300 officials are expected to attend and now the organisers are calling for 300 volunteers to help the games run smoothly.

Winter Games NZ chief executive Arthur Klap will host two evenings in April in Queenstown and Wanaka for people interested in volunteering.

"Volunteers are absolutely essential to the success of the Winter Games and hugely valued members of the team. Not all the jobs are snow-related. We'll need people to man information desks, transport teams and help behind the scenes, as well as be on the mountains," he said.

Volunteers receive clothing, lift tickets, food and drinks and an invitation to the after-party.

Volunteer information nights will be held in Wanaka on April 7 (Oakridge Resort) and Queenstown on April 8 (Novotel Queenstown Lakeside).
