St Paul's festive fare

The Southern Consort of Voices' annual Christmas recital in St Paul's Cathedral tomorrow will span four centuries and the four corners of the world.

The broad selection of festive fare includes Veni, veni Emmanuel (Kodaly) and The Wassail Song (Vaughan Williams), Renaissance composers Praetorius, Sweelinck and Gabrielli, and contemporary composers such as John Tavener, Edwin Roxburgh and John Joubert.

A highlight will be an arrangement by contemporary Swedish composer Jan Sandstrom of traditional German carol Es ist ein ros entsprungen, originally harmonised by Michael Praetorius in 1609.

Consort music director Daniel Kelly says St Paul's Cathedral has a "Rolls-Royce" acoustic.

"It's always a privilege for the Consort to sing in there. It helps us create beautiful arching phases and a blended sound."

The Southern Consort of Voices' Christmas recital starts at 12.15pm tomorrow at St Paul's Cathedral.

Tickets available at the door.
