Fire services were kept busy last night fighting small fires around the region, starting with a kitchen fire in St Kilda, in Dunedin, about 5.35pm.

A Fire Service spokesman said an elderly woman was taken to Dunedin Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation after a pot on the stove went on fire in the kitchen of a Bellona St house.

The Palmerston fire brigade attended a collision between two motorcycles and a car on State Highway 1 about 2km north of Palmerston about 5.50pm.

A St John spokeswoman said two people were taken by ambulance to Oamaru Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

About 10 minutes later, Weston and Kakanui fire crews were called to a grass fire at the edge of a barley paddock in Airedale Rd, near Weston.

A second grass fire further along the road was also extinguished. The Oamaru fire brigade attended a controlled burn, which went out of control, in Aitcheson Rd, near Duntroon, about 1.50pm.
