A haven for suffering families

It's an unassuming house on a quiet street, but the comfort it brings families - often in their greatest time of need - is priceless.

Sunshine Lodge, on Williams St, Sunshine Bay, was bought by The Professionals Fisken and Associates Ltd in 1997, along with another Sunshine Lodge in Taupo.

Both properties host families who have either lost a child to cancer, or have a child fighting cancer.

At the beginning of the month, Tracey, Marty, Kimberley, Natalie and Matthew Peoples, of Christchurch, had a much needed break there after losing youngest daughter and sister Caitlin to a rare form of melanoma.

"It has been a huge emotional battle and our Queenstown break away has really helped us to lift our spirits," Mrs Peoples said.

Caitlin was born with the rare condition and got "really sick" when she was about 18 months old, and died at the beginning of 2008 aged 2.

The family heard about Sunshine Lodge in Queenstown through the Child Cancer Foundation and used some free air travel to stay in the lodge.

"We had a great time; it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. It was a healing time. We run our own business too, so unless you go away, you live and breathe everything.

"It was just about regrouping and thinking about other things.

"I know that's what other families who go down there with children who have been through treatment [feel]. It's a break away from having that constant pressure of treatment and everything else that goes with it."

Mrs Peoples said the vouchers from Queenstown tourism operators had also helped immensely.

"I think the whole community should be aware these people [Professionals] help so many families in need. I just really want to show our thanks and encourage people to use their services," Mrs Peoples said.

Shelley Rhodes, of Professionals Queenstown, said the company had been proud supporters of the Child Cancer Foundation since 1995.

Since then, respective offices and sales people had raised more than $3.2 million for the charity.

The money had been used to buy and maintain the two Sunshine Lodges, a Family Place in Wellington, and helped to buy a Family Place in Auckland.

They had also helped buy a National Centre to house the Child Cancer Foundation and assisted its associated charity CanTeen.

Ms Rhodes said the Sunshine Lodges gave children and their families coping with cancer a chance to have a holiday, relax and spend time together to recuperate in a stress-free environment.

Cleaning was done by A Woman's Touch every week, paid for by Professionals as a group, she said.

Each family also received vouchers from the TSS Earnslaw, Kiwi and Birdlife Park, Skyline, Shotover Jet and now NZSki .

"The families stay for a week, for five to seven days, and [Sunshine Lodge] is pretty much full all year round. They use it just as their own house and we supply bread and milk and things.

"It's a really lovely thing to do - I get all of the [thank-you] letters in at the end of the day and I sit here bawling my eyes out," Ms Rhodes said.

The house has three bedrooms and an outdoor area, but the escape it provided was the most important thing.

"It's not a hospital ... it's nice to get away from the machines and be a family."
