At Skippers, at one time our greatest quartz reefing field, we hope to see a general revival in this class of mining.
In that locality there are many lodes worth development, but capital is required.
The richness of the stone in this portion of the mining belt of Wakatipu is undoubted, and in the future we have every reason to believe it will be the Skippers of old, both in quartz-reefing and alluvial mining.
Even at present the latter is contributing a large share in the district's output.
The Arrow River Company has commenced operations on an extensive scale, and no doubt the payable returns of last year will continue during the present season.
In the same gorge the Shamrock Company will on its capital being subscribed, and it is on the eve of it, commence operations.
Judging by expert opinion this property will be a dividend-paying and lasting concern.
From Cardrona way we learn that mining matters are showing signs of activity, and we hope during the present season of having the privilege and pleasure of recording good and payable returns from the different ventures in that once famous field.
We hear that Mr J. Tripp has struck payable stone in the Nugget mine, Skippers, and he deserves every success for the way he had stuck to his venture.
It is probable some hands will be put on to develop the lode.
Messrs Johnston and Peat's reef opposite the Nuggets looks exceedingly well.
They have done an immense amount of work on it.
• A sale which must be classed among the largest made in suburban lands about Dunedin has been just completed by Park, Reynolds (Limited).
The land in question comprises about 44 acres and the sale has been made on behalf of the executors of the estate of the late Mr W. H. Cutten.
This magnificent property is situated in a delightful position at Anderson's Bay, and all that has been reserved from sale is the residence and the few acres in which it stands, so that the public will have the opportunity of securing very choice building sites, as we understand the sale has been made to a syndicate, which purposes subdividing its purchase.- ODT, 30.8.1909.
