Democracy, China and the US

A global think tank announced at the end of last year that China will overtake the United States as the world largest economy much sooner than expected.

That was one of the impacts of momentous 2020.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research, in its annual report, said the change at the top was expected in 2028, five years earlier than previously estimated.

The contrasting economic recoveries after Covid-19 was given as the reason.

The past year has been poor for the West in all sorts of ways. There has not only been the direct health and economic impacts from Covid but also a loss of confidence and esteem.

At the same time, China can — and does — crow about its system of government and its effective control of Covid, even though it is understood to have begun in the wet markets of Wuhan.

It has seemed apparent to the West that societies should be governed by liberal democracies. They provide peace, protection and prosperity as well as dignity and freedom.

Each generation — at least until now — has been materially richer, lived longer and, generally, had more freedoms.

It is accepted that democracy is at times messy. It has lots of flaws. This style of politics threatens unity, gives power to vested interests, contains potential for inequity, can persecute minorities and can be hijacked.

But, as Winston Churchill famously said in 1947: “Many forms of government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No-one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”

Yet, this is the form of governing that in the states of Europe and America has failed to protect both its citizens and its economies. With the island exceptions of Taiwan, New Zealand and Australia (mostly), democracy did not deliver.

This comes on top of an era when the mistruths of the Brexit campaign and the inveterate lies of Donald Trump held considerable sway, when trust in the Establishment has disintegrated, when nationalism and populism in the likes of Turkey, India, Poland and Hungary are used to subvert human rights and democracy itself.

It comes at a time when democracy appears to be delivering to the rich and powerful and to the corporations. But its common accompaniment, “neo-liberal” economics, does not seem to be creating the jobs, the dignity and the shared wealth needed to cement cohesion and satisfaction.

On the surface it would seem China — an authoritarian, capitalist dictatorship — is an alternative. Those in charge know they must keep delivering better standards of living. Support from the people is buttressed by nationalism.

Nevertheless, rumours of the decline of democracy could well be exaggerated. The United States has survived a corrupt president and massive misinformation. Europe could well bounce back from Covid. Britain will muddle through, albeit poorer, after its foolish Brexit. India has immense strength. Vaccines provide promise for recoveries from Covid.

The feedback citizens give to their rulers — even in an age of false information and fake news — is essential for good decision making, for dealing with the discontent and problem points. And the rulers, through the ballot box, know they are accountable, that they must listen and respond.

China, too, despite its vast population and power, is vulnerable.

Weaknesses include its declining comparative manufacturing advantage, its ageing population, environmental degradation, its heavily indebted banks and state enterprises and the vast amounts it needs to spend on internal security.

China, too, through the millennia often has been a powerhouse.

Given it has four times the population of the United States, it would be reasonable these days to expect its economy to be massive, whatever its power structure.

Clever use of social media by bad actors is what has damaged the West's democracy. Until the large corporations are brought under the control people are going to be hypnotized into voting for extremist positions such as the Trump presidency and Brexit. A combination of social media and the Murdoch press is keeping the people of the western democracies reduced to lab rats.

What utter nonsense. You display what is sometimes known as Neurocognitive Impairment Disorder. Sometimes confused with cognitive bias, or cemented confirmation bias, or, in your case TDS. It's funny, everyone for a generation has been wary of China. They have singlehandedly crushed thousands of business worldwide with their cheap labour and imports. And milked the global economy in the process. Now step in Trump to turn things around and everybody with only half a brain criticise him. China under Obama was stealing every intellectual property they could get their hands on. Universities are filled with students/spies paid by Chinese government to get any technological advantage. Large US companies and government, have thousands of daily hacking attacks. They raped us for years and we not only let them do it, we helped them do it with our idiotic policies. We moved all high tech manufacturing there to the point where we are no longer able to compete or even build the tech on the level of China. This space tech that allows China to land on the moon is not of their own blood and sweat. It’s all stolen from US and European space agencies and private sector. Lab rats = CNN Grizz, lol.

I refer you to the workings of Cambridge Analytica and the Koch brothers use of 'astroturfing' to create and fund such movements as the Tea Party. Once fringe, they now have sitting senators in the U.S. put there by the brainwashed electorate. And lets not forget QAnon, a social media monster that has influenced the opinions of millions (lab rats).

You have shown your bias with your opening comments being loaded with pseudo-intellectual claptrap. Just absolute nonsense. Typical of the socialist you appear to be.
China has been operating in the free market, they have not crushed any businesses, they have used the capitalist free market more effectively than other countries and taken the profits, just as they should.
You state China under Obama. You do realise Obama was President of the USA? China was never under his control. As for stealing intellectual property, this is patently untrue. The foreign Companies moving to China happily signed away their rights to their intellectual property for the huge economic returns they got for moving there. You say it yourself, the west "moved all high tech manufacturing there to the point where we are no longer able to compete or even build the tech on the level of China." The west volunteered to do this.
As for spies and hacking, the west does the same themselves, don't be so naive.
You say Trump tuned things around. How? He has failed to broker a deal with the Chinese, he lost the tariff war, the USA trade deficit has grown. All of this was predictable before he ever came to power.

China is putting Australia under considerable pressure and is now reported to be sending 400 trawlers to fish in Australian territorial waters. New Zealand is keeping its head down but at the same time is revealing how controlled it really is by China. Any attempt by New Zealand to speak truthfully to China could have horrendous consequences for trade. Does that make New Zealand a vassal state or merely under the influence of China? We often criticise politics in the UK and US but ignore the elephant in our own room.

"Each generation — at least until now — has been materially richer, lived longer and, generally, had more freedoms."
Correct and that was achieved by democratic, capitalist countries first and then spread around the world in a well intentioned and hughley successful effort to raise living standards all over the world.
"at least until now" highlights the folly of allowing a Communist country to dominate global manufacturing and supply chains. It highlights the error of allowing them access to our markets and ownership of companies and infrastructure. It is a stark lesson as to why we should be vigilant when they again power in key UN functions like WHO, in whom we trust to control virus outbreaks rather than promote its spread around the world.
Have no doubt about it, the CCP wants payback on what it sees as its Century of Shame. Every time they dominate and 'correct' what they see as historical wrongs, this is what they claim as having achieved to THEIR followers.
There is no forgive, count your blessings and move forward in peace and prosperity with countries that operate on such a foundation.
History is very clear about that.
These are very dangerous times.

I'm quite sure practitioners of Falun gong and Ughyur Muslims are being well looked after in China right now. The virus is the least of their concerns!

This article seems like a puff piece for the CCP. As long as you're not a minority in China and you do exactly as the government demands, I'm sure it's perfectly rosy over there.

China is not a model to emulate or admire for anyone who cares about human rights.
