Racing: Guineas start in mind

Paruakaka trainer Kenny Rae is viewing the Dunedin Guineas for Cassius, who cleared maiden ranks at Greymouth on Saturday.

Rae is back at Riccarton with an eight-horse team after winning races on the West Coast circuit with Cassius, Kandy Lane (two), Classic Kanga and Street Law.

Cassius won over 1100m on Saturday when having his third start.

Rae ruled out the Gore Guineas next Saturday for the Van Nistelrooy gelding.

"He is a lightly framed horse and he has lightened up a bit but he is eating up," Rae said.

The $45,000 Dunedin Guineas is on February 6.

Rae won a race with Faalcon at the corresponding Wingatui meeting 12 months ago but the horse was disqualified after returning a positive test to Ketoprofen.

Rae was fined $4000 and ordered to pay costs of $3000.

An earlier Cassius, a gelding by Booby Trap, owned and trained at Wingatui by the late Ces Wallis, won nine races, including a hurdles and steeplechase, in the 1950s.

Chris Johnson and Terry Moseley were each suspended from next Saturday until the following Thursday inclusive for careless riding at Greymouth.

Johnson, riding Show Cat, shifted out at the 200m in race 11, causing a check to Kalgoorlie Bomber. Moseley shifted in on Envee at the 175m when riding Peter Porter to win the same race.

Johnson rode Bruce Almighty to an upset win in the Greymouth Cup, a race he won on Vivz in 1994.

Jillian Morris and Andrew Calder were each suspended for four riding days after admitting charges of careless riding at Te Rapa on Thursday.

Morris is out from Friday until the following Wednesday inclusive. 27.

Calder is out until midnight on January 25.

A horse missing a bone from her head won the $55,000 listed Marton Cup at Awapuni on Saturday.

Heat Haze was having her first start in open ranks and she has entered calculations for the Wellington Cup on Saturday week.

Heat Haze is trained at Matamata by Paul Jenkins, who said the horse smashed a head bone called the poll when being transported home from a yearling sale.

"She took the poll out of her head.

She basically has no bone between her ears," Jenkins said.

"It was a pretty serious head injury."

Heat Haze was again in the wars as a 3yr-old.

"She then chipped both fetlocks as a spring 3yr-old, which required more surgery."

Consequently the Zabeel 5yr-old mare did not begin racing until 18 months ago.

She has now won six of her 20 starts.

All of the wins have been at a distance of not less than 1800m.

The Wellington Cup is over 2400m, 200m further than that the Marton Cup.

The mare is also entered for the $1 million Auckland Cup (3200m) on March 10.

Heat Haze is part-owned by breeder Lorna Moore, who won the 2005 Auckland Cup with Bazelle, another Zabeel mare trained by Jenkins.

Heat Haze, ridden by Lisa Allpress, came from well back to win by half a length from the pacemaker, Cassini.

Titsgittin did well for third after covering extra ground.

Heat Haze is on the second line of favouritism for the Wellington Cup at $10 with Fiorano. Booming, winner of a rating 90 2300m race on Saturday, is sharing favouritism with Red Ruler.
