Central Otago teachers heard from representatives of the Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) about the union's new plans for negotiating pay rises and better working conditions with the Ministry of Education, in Cromwell on Wednesday.

About 100 teachers from Wakatipu High, Mt Aspiring College, Cromwell College and Dunstan High attended the meeting in the Cromwell College auditorium.

PPTA Otago executive member Joe Hunter told the teachers that the Central Otago and Lakes districts costs of living, rent and mortgages were relevant issues for teachers in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes Districts.

"Teachers don't want to come into the area, so schools can't offer the breadth of curriculum."

Ms Hunter described the meeting as "really positive".

"It was good for [union] members to step away from the classroom and discuss the issues."

At the meeting, teachers voted on the PPTA claim to increase pay to keep in line with national median income and improve working conditions.

The Otago PPTA representatives will hold another meeting at Otago Boys' High School in Dunedin today.
