Tournament ends without cup awarded

Dianne Elliot holds the South Island Ice Hockey League’s Erewhon Cup, after the outdoor tournament was abandoned in Naseby yesterday.

The tournament started last Thursday, but the outdoor ice rink had deteriorated so much, the final game could not be held and the cup was not awarded.

Teams from as far away as Auckland competed.

The Erewhon Cup is the oldest ice hockey trophy in New Zealand and was first contested in 1937.

Yesterday was the first time since the end of World War 2 that the cup was not awarded.
