A man allegedly assaulted a security guard at a Dunedin convenience store after being busted smuggling out lollies underneath his top, police say.
Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police were called to Night ‘n Day Regent Rd about 11pm on Friday.
The store’s loss prevention officer discovered a 45-year-old man who was allegedly concealing confectionery underneath his top.
The man was confronted by the staff member as he attempted to leave the store.
The staff member attempted to detain him, but the man resisted, pushing him before running from the store, Sgt Lee said.
“The male had been trespassed from the store a week earlier.”
Police could not immediately find the man, but later saw him walking through the Octagon a few hours later.
He was arrested and bailed to appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date, charged with assault, wilful trespass and shoplifting, Sgt Lee said.
