Call for more council nominations

Nominations for  Central Otago District Council and community board elections cover only a third of 28 vacancies with one week to go.

Council electoral officer Kara Leckie yesterday urged anyone considering putting a name forward to submit nominations as soon as possible to avoid ineligibility if paperwork was incorrect.

"We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to stand."

Nominees  for Central Otago office this week include former Sport Otago chairman Russell Garbutt for the Vincent Community Board, Barry Hambleton for the Alexandra ward of the Central Otago District Council and the Vincent Community Board, Shirley Calvert for the Cromwell ward of the council and the Cromwell Community Board, Malcolm Topliss for the Earnscleugh-Manuherikia ward, Susan Evans for the Maniototo Community Board and Clifford Parker and Russell Read for the Teviot Valley Community Board.

In the Clutha district, Bryan Cadogan has been nominated for mayor, Stewart Cowie as a Clutha Valley ward councillor, John Herbert and Michelle Kennedy for West Otago ward councillors, Hilary McNab for the Catlins ward and Bruce Graham for the Balclutha ward.

In the Waitaki district, Guy Percival is nominated for the Corriedale ward on the district council, while Graham Sullivan is nominated for the Ahuriri Community Board and Heather McGregor for the Waihemo Community Board.

Jim Boult has this week been nominated for mayor of the Queenstown Lakes district, Ross McRobie to represent the Wanaka ward on the council and Rachel Brown for the Wanaka Community Board.

Nominations are flowing in faster for seats on the Invercargill City Council.

Lindsay Abbott, David Kennedy, Rosemarie Halligan, Alex Crackett, David Rohan, Neil Thomas, John Turnbull were nominated this week.

Paul Duffy and Julie Keast were nominated for the Waihopai-Toetoes ward on the Southland District Council and Neil Paterson for the Winton-Wallacetown ward.

Pam Yorke was nominated for the  Edendale-Wyndham Community Board, Andre Bekhuis and Maureen Johnston for the Otautau Community Board and Anite Geeson for the Stewart Island Community Board.

Nominations close on August 12.
