Police are urging anyone with information about recent vandalism at Alexandra's skatepark to come forward, after racist graffiti was spray-painted at the facility.

Central Otago sub-area supervisor Senior Sergeant Clint Wright said the graffiti was reported on Tuesday and police were investigating the vandalism and when it might have occurred.

The graffiti includes racist comments and obscenities spray-painted on jumps and bowls at the skatepark, which is on recreational reserve land between the bike park and the Molyneux Aquatic Centre. Some graffiti was also painted on the cricket practice wickets and rugby scoreboard at Dunstan High School.

Alexandra BMX Club president Tony Nelson said he was ''disgusted'' by the graffiti.

''I'm really angry. A lot of time and effort goes into these recreational areas and maintaining them and it's not fair that people are now having to clean it up ... The [graffiti] comments are just disgusting. Is this what our town is coming to?''

The skatepark was developed by Fulton Hogan Central alongside the bike park, which Fulton Hogan also built. A Fulton Hogan representative could not be contacted, but a staff member cleaned up the graffiti yesterday.

Anyone with information about the vandalism can phone Alexandra police on (03) 440-2500 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800555-111.
