Police are deciding where to search next for Alexandra man Christopher Bates.

Senior Sergeant John Fookes, of Queenstown, said yesterday police had made extensive searches of the Clutha and Manuherikia Rivers and searches of the wider Alexandra area.

Police, Land Search and Rescue and Mr Bates' family and friends had finished searching primary search areas.

Yesterday, police were evaluating further information before deciding on the next steps.

He was still hopeful Mr Bates would be reunited with his family, Snr Sgt Fookes said.

The last confirmed sighting of Mr Bates was at 3.50pm on Sunday, February 11, when he was seen at the Z service station in Tarbert St, Alexandra.

He bought a pack of cigarettes and left on foot. He was wearing a grey-green hoodie, white T-shirt, dark shorts and sneakers.

Snr Sgt Fookes said the unsettled weather earlier this week made the search challenging.

A police spokeswoman said anyone who had information about Mr Bates' whereabouts should ring the Alexandra Police Station on (03) 440-2500.

If they had any urgent information they could call 111.
