Further cycle trails for Maniototo are proposed in a draft community plan for the Patearoa and Upper Taieri region.

Public submissions are being sought on the draft document which expresses "the vision, values and identity of the people".

An update report presented by Central Otago District Council community and engagement manager Paula Penno was approved and discussed at the Maniototo Community Board meeting in Ranfurly on Thursday.

A new community plan for the Patearoa and Upper Taieri district gained traction towards the end of last year.

The district's first community plan, which included the Patearoa, Paerau and Upper Taieri areas, was developed in 2007.

The new draft plan had incorporated local opinion gathered via surveys and community workshops last year.

The use of a paper road as a public cycle trail between Hamiltons and Daisybank is proposed. The idea had been developed by a member of the community who had been "working independently".

Community Board chairman Robert Hazlett, however, expressed doubt over the Hamiltons-Daisybank concept.

"I'm picking the landowners won't be happy. It is all gated now."

The draft plan also includes determining the future of the Patearoa community hall and using community fundraising efforts through next year's Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust Cavalcade.
