James Huffadine (23), of Bannockburn, said the experience was a lot of fun as well as being educational and a good networking opportunity.
The Parkburn Management site manager competed in the national event in Christchurch on Thursday, with four others vying for top honours.
The tasks ranged from an environment and sustainability exercise to pest and disease identification and quad bike safety.
Competitors had to take part in a leadership panel and give a three-minute speech on the role of innovation and technology in the industry.
The winner was Hamish Gates, of Pukekohe, while Craig Ward, of Katikati was second.
Mr Huffadine said going into the last two challenges, only 20 points separated the five contestants.
''It was really a great experience and gaining exposure to all those other industries as part of it, and meeting the key players in the industries, was all useful.''
He hopes to have another go at the contest in a few years, after ''gaining a bit more experience and a bit more wisdom''.
Contestants have to be under 30.
Mr Huffadine encouraged other young people in the industry to give the regional and national contest a go.
''You learn some new skills and meet leaders in the industry as well.''
His next task will be to complete the horticulture diploma he has been studying through the Otago Polytechnic's Cromwell campus.
''I've only got one little piece left to do for it, so I'll get that polished off and then it's done.''
