Highlands Motorsport Park owner, promotor and competitor Tony Quinn couldn't have asked for more from the Cromwell facility's second running of its 101 endurance meeting at the weekend.

Crowd numbers were up on last year, the corporate stands were full, the lunchtime entertainment was a hit and the weather played ball.

Speaking at the post-101 race press conference, Mr Quinn managed to look both exhausted and exuberant following his dramatic last-lap win with Australian V8 Supercar driver Garth Tander.

''I'm not sure where I am ... It can look calm above the water, but we're all paddling madly underneath. There's lots I'm still looking at,'' he said of his myriad roles over the weekend.

''It's all very pleasing for the second major event to be more successful than the first one. Everyone's done an amazing job.''

Highlands estimated the weekend crowd exceeded the approximately 25,000 who attended the event last year.

Highlands' event marketing manager Melanie Kees said another courtesy bus was added yesterday to carry spectators around the circuit to the different viewing areas and to the new safari park.

''With the new spectator areas we've created since last year's inaugural Highlands 101 event, it's allowed people to spread out around the circuit and enjoy the racing and entertainment from various vantage points,'' she said.
