New Zealand Rugby confirmed this morning the former Highlanders and Otago coach will join the All Blacks on a two-year contract beginning in 2028.

Brown is currently an assistant coach for the Springboks, and remains contracted there until the conclusion of next year's World Cup.

"Tony is a world-class coach who is highly regarded and consistently sought after by head coaches and teams around the world," NZ Rugby CEO Steve Lancaster said.

"We know Tony is available after the 2027 Rugby World Cup and he’s made it clear he would love to be part of the All Blacks. This decision is simple, it’s about ensuring the best coaches return to New Zealand.

"It’s for the All Blacks head coach to shape the structure and portfolios of their coaching team and we have every confidence that Tony is a high-quality addition when he joins in 2028."

Lancaster added that All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie was engaged throughout the process and supportive of the appointment.

Brown coached Otago from 2012 to 2014, while having various stints with the Highlanders as both an assistant and head coach between 2014 and 2022.

He spent time as assistant coach with Japan, as well as his current role with South Africa.

As a player Brown played 18 matches for the All Blacks, and was among the stars of the Otago and Highlanders teams of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
