Joel Thompson (13), of The Terrace School, Alexandra, concentrates as he throws a stone at the Central Otago Primary Schools' Curling Tournament in Alexandra yesterday.

The seven-school competition was won by Omakau School pupils Bridget Malcolm (11), Flynn Rivers (12), Anna Duncan (12) and James Paterson (11).

The children use stones which are smaller than those used in adult competition, use the width of the rink instead of the length and play short 15-minute games.

Organiser Nick Loughnan said the standard had picked up since he started the competition in 2008.

"Back then we just used catering tins filled up with concrete.''
