Police named the man as Andrew James Sinclair (25).
He fell from a moving vehicle lasy Saturday on SH8 north of Clyde, and was subsequently admitted to Dunedin Public Hosptial with serious head injuries.
"Andrew's family wish to advise that they have been overwhelmed with messages of support from those within the community and wish to pass on their thanks,'' Acting Senior Sergeant Jared Kirk, of Dunedin, said.
The family have requested privacy.
A police investigation is continuing, and the death has been referred to the coroner.
