Bannockburn's Across the Bridge art festival spokeswoman Jan Hawkins models some of the creative hats which will be on show during this year's Bannie Beanie Competition Display.

The competition will showcase the work of talented milliners. Those designs are a secret until the opening. However, all will be revealed from October 5-6, when an exhibition of other millinery designs by locals will also be on display at the Bannockburn Community Church, including those pictured.

The Bannie Beanie Competition theme this year is "In Our Element'' and the public is encouraged to vote for their favourite.

A range of other events are also planned for the week, including plays, a poetry open-mic performance, art displays and workshops, to name a few.

Festivities start today and run until Sunday.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
