Alexandra Community House will be constructed on the grounds of St Enoch's Church, on land owned by the Alexandra-Clyde-Lauder Union Parish.
A charitable trust has been formed to spearhead the project and the plans were progressing well, trust chairwoman Bernie Lepper said.
The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland will consider the lease for the project this week and the trust was hoping for approval, Mrs Lepper said.
The facility will replace the Church House building in St Enoch's grounds, which houses the Citizens Advice Bureau, Central Otago Women's Support Link and Central Otago Budget Advisory Services, among other social services.
"Church House has been a very useful facility but we've outgrown the existing building and it no longer meets our needs," trust deputy chairwoman Carole Gillions said.
A feasibility study carried out last year proved the viability of the project and the trust already had nine permanent tenants confirmed for the building, and between 30 and 40 other groups or agencies who would use the facility on a regular basis.
The trust declined to speculate on the possible cost of the building but Ms Gillions said it would seek funding from community trusts and other sources.
Octa Associates project manager Chris Brick said there would be further consultation with tenants and potential tenants and he expected concept plans to be completed by mid-November.
Fundraising would begin after the design was finalised.
There was still time for further registrations of interest from groups or agencies wanting to be accommodated, Ms Gillions said. They could contact Mrs Lepper at Central Otago REAP in Alexandra.
The building would be available to any non-profit organisation and the trust was grateful for the support of the church and Central Lakes Trust, Mrs Gillions said.
The Central Lakes trust had funded the feasibility study and had also been asked to help fund the concept plans.
Up to three buildings on the church grounds might be demolished to make way for the new building.
