Recycling centre plantings

Native plants will bring life to a neglected section of Alexandra's recycling centre.

Last week, volunteers dug up frosted soil to plant cabbage trees, daisies and native flax at Central Otago Wastebusters.

They were then told by its staff how the site had progressed since an arson last September.

The event was part of a week of projects organised by sustainability group Making a Difference for Central Otago. Wastebusters spokeswoman Gina Dempster said it wanted to beautify a neglected part of the site.

The main buildings at the site were destroyed by the arson and its re-use store now operates out of shipping containers.

The rebuild would begin in summer, she said.

"I don't expect it to take too long. Hopefully it will be finished by the end of summer.

"It's a long process, but we're fully insured.

"It's been hard on staff, having to work outside. But they don't complain and always have a smile.''

A 43-year-old man was charged in January regarding the arson, but the case is still going through the court process.
