Repairs to hotel ahead of schedule

Progress on repairing the Bannockburn Hotel has been faster than expected.

The roof of the building was damaged on September 25 by a fire which started in the kitchen.

The hotel is still trading, with a garden bar set up outside, and the public bar will be back in business as soon as possible, loss adjuster Steve Dillon of McLarens Young said.

"It probably looks worse than it is because the roof had to be replaced. Apart from that, the damage was mostly smoke damage," he said.

Breen Construction was repairing the roof and fixing the minor structural damage in the kitchen.

There were no changes being made to the inside of the building, aside from new carpet and a fresh coat of paint.

"Progress has been rapid, quicker than we expected and we're very happy with how it's going, but I'd rather not put a deadline on when it will all be completed. It will be done as soon as possible," Mr Dillon said.

Work was concentrating on the public bar at present.

It will be re-opened first, then the focus will shift to the kitchen and restaurant.

The hotel is the venue for the prizegiving at the end of the annual Bannockburn Gutbuster mountain bike race this Saturday.

A marquee will be set up in the grounds and a temporary kitchen facility will be on site to cater for competitors.

The hotel was built in 1935.

It is not classified as a historic building, but is located on an archeological site.
