Cardrona and Lowburn curlers, accompanied by their stones, will attend a special service at the Tarras Church on Saturday.

In the unusual ceremony, the district's curling stones will be blessed before being rested for the summer.

Organiser John Perriam, of Bendigo Station, said Upper Clutha Anglican Parish vicar the Ven Damon Plimmer would preside but he was not sure who would carry out the blessing.

The first to be blessed was likely to be New Zealand's oldest curling stone, the 400-year-old stone Mr Perriam imported from Scotland recently.

The 11am church service will be followed by an auction at Bendigo Station to raise money for the potential purchase of the church by the community.

The owner of the church, the Upper Clutha Presbyterian Parish, is planning to sell the building, and Mr Perriam said the community was considering buying it, although a decision had not yet been made.
