People and dogs slid on the frozen Lower Manorburn Dam, near Alexandra, yesterday.
Several nights of temperatures below -4degC meant a section of ice on the dam was several inches thick.
Alexandra man Mark Williams said it would still take a few more decent frosts for the middle of the dam to be thick enough to skate on.
''I woke up this morning and thought, 'perfect'. It's really magical.''
Warmer winter temperatures last year meant water in the dam did not freeze enough to safely walk on.
''I just hope there's no rain or snow coming, because that can ruin it.''
