Magnitude 5.6 quake shakes south

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake, centred near Milford Sound, has rattled much of the lower South Island tonight.

According to Geonet, the quake struck 40km west of Milford Sound, at 9.53pm, and was 5km deep.

More than 1700 people reported feeling it in the immediate aftermath, with most experiencing weak to moderate shaking.
