Flooding response

An independent hearings panel examining an application to build a floodbank in central Milton is expected to release its decision in the next few weeks.

The Clutha District Council has applied for resource consent to build the floodbank on the north bank of the Tokomairiro River, to reduce the water flowing through the town's southern streets when it floods.

Two major floods within the space of 15 months prompted the council's move.

It attracted 21 submissions, with 18 of those opposed, two wanting more information, and the other taking a neutral view.

Submitters spoke at a hearing in Milton last week.

Council planning and environment manager Murray Brass said the panel reserved its decision and recently conducted a site visit.

He expects its decision will be out within a month.
