The game of badminton brought Colin and Dorothy Duffy together.

Yesterday, the Kurow couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

When asked how they met, Mrs Duffy had an easy answer.

"It’s a small town," she joked.

"I played badminton and Colin was playing badminton over at Hakataramea and he said ‘I’ll take you over’ and that was it. The rest is history."

They enjoyed a long and happy life together, Mrs Duffy said.

"We made our vows for life and here we are.

"I think we’ve met that."

The couple were married at Columba Church in Oamaru in 1965.

Recalling events from their wedding day, both remembered the rain trying to play spoilsport.

"We wanted to go to the Oamaru Gardens for our photos, but of course it rained so we had to go to the studio," Mrs Duffy said.

"It wasn’t quite as good, but that’s the way it is. That’s life," Mr Duffy said.

Mr Duffy was born and bred in Kurow, having spent his entire life in the town — except for four months in Ashburton — while Mrs Duffy was raised in Duntroon.

Together, they have lived in Kurow for all 60 years of their marriage.

Mr Duffy is a life member at the Kurow Golf Club and Mrs Duffy volunteers at the Kurow Museum and the library.

The couple will celebrate the occasion with a family get-together at Labour Weekend.
