Bad behaviour strategy works

Community initiatives to reduce bad behaviour in Waitaki Valley towns during Christmas and New Year were a success and could form a model for future holiday weekends.

After bad behaviour by young people at Otematata during Labour Weekend, police, emergency services, the Ahuriri Community Board and Waitaki District Council's community safety officer Alison Banks met before Christmas to discuss how to prevent the same situation during the summer holidays.

Mrs Banks said the strategies put in place were successful.

The behaviour of holiday-makers, including young people, was "fantastic", she said.

She had received a positive response from the holiday-makers - including young people - and Omarama and Otematata communities.

"A noticeable increase in police numbers and wide advertising informing people about the intention to reduce alcohol-related crime and behaviour was a contributing factor to the success," she said.

Initiatives that were implemented included a temporary liquor ban in Omarama, temporary police station at Otematata, visits by the rural drink-driving unit, additional highway patrols and provision of facilities at Omarama to detain and process offenders in the Waitaki Valley.

Those measures will be discussed in March and form the basis for preventive measures for Easter and Labour Weekends in the Waitaki Valley.

It will also include the possibility of a total glass ban at camp sites, parks and reserves throughout the Waitaki Valley at all times.

Mrs Banks said the Omarama community had been really pleased with the results of the temporary liquor ban and happy with behaviour, as had been Otematata residents.

As part of the Omarama liquor ban, offenders were offered "alternative action" - cleaning up around the town instead of facing prosecution.

Only one young offender faced action, starting at 6am to help clean up the town after the Omarama rodeo.

Camp sites around the Waitaki lakes were visited throughout the day and early evening by police and Mrs Banks in an effort to head off any bad behaviour.

Young campers were "very obliging", giving ideas and advice about what could be done to sort out the behaviour of those who spoilt the holiday for others.
