Camper's behaviour good

Young people camping in the Waitaki Valley have behaved themselves over Labour Weekend so far, for the second year in a row, after major problems in 2009.

A major police presence at Otematata, with support from Omarama and Kurow, had to deal with only a small number of minor offences.

Last year the Waitaki Safer Community Council set up a "youth camp" next to Loch Laird, which, supported by other groups and emergency services, played a big part in a trouble-free weekend.

This year an unofficial camp set up in the same place, attracted an estimated 100 young people on Friday night and about 150 on Saturday night.
