Campervan, car collide at blackspot

A campervan and a car collided yesterday at the State Highway 1 crash hot-spot near the Moeraki turnoff.

No-one was injured in the 2.10pm crash in the middle of the intersection of  SH1 and the Moeraki Boulders access road.

A police spokeswoman said the driver of the campervan was issued an infringement notice for failing to give way.

The crash happened on the same day submissions closed on the New Zealand Transport Agency’s plan for an electronic warning and a "variable speed limit" of 70kmh for the area, where there have been many  serious crashes in recent years.

Senior Constable Stefan Witehira, of Palmerston, said both drivers were shaken.

He said people needed to be aware of  traffic around them and not have such a strong focus on  surrounding views when driving.

Snr Const Witehira said the highway was not blocked by the crash.
